How to choose your first newsletter platform

Choose around the emails you need to send: a regular issue, a welcome sequence, or a newsletter leading to a product offer. This is a documentation-based guide, not a hands-on review. Product references were checked on November 8, 2026.

This documentation-based guide includes a systeme.io affiliate link. We may earn a commission if you purchase a paid plan through the marked link. Other links are ordinary official references.

1. Start with the first job your newsletter must do

Write one sentence: “My newsletter helps [reader] achieve [outcome] every [week/month].” Then list the first three emails you intend to send. A weekly broadcast and a timed welcome series require different capabilities. If you only need a signup page and a regular issue, begin there. If new readers must receive three emails automatically, check sequence availability before choosing a free plan.

2. Two starting points to investigate

Kit’s Free plan supports up to 10,000 subscribers and unlimited broadcasts. Its help center lists email sequences and visual automations as paid features. That makes the free option worth investigating for a simple recurring newsletter, but a sequence-based launch needs a paid-plan check. Systeme.io’s contact-limit help lists 2,000 contacts for its Freemium plan. If you also need a product funnel, investigate its current funnel and campaign limits in the live pricing page and your account. We could not verify those detailed limits from the current pricing-page text, so they are not reproduced here.

3. Match the tool to your next month of work

For a weekly newsletter, investigate Kit’s broadcast workflow first. For a newsletter leading to a simple product offer, investigate systeme.io’s funnel workflow first. These are starting hypotheses based on the documented features, not results from hands-on testing. If your main goal is a publication with a different set of monetization tools, compare other platforms too. This guide does not rank the whole market.

4. Run the same five-task trial

Before paying, compare both candidates using the same small task list. Create a draft signup page. Subscribe with an address you control. Send one test issue. Check where the confirmation and unsubscribe controls appear. Finally, find the subscriber export option and review what data you can take with you. Record steps, limitations and questions. If a trial asks for a payment method, check renewal and cancellation terms before continuing. This checklist is a proposed test, not a claim that these tasks have been completed.

Use these boxes while testing. They reset when you reload; no data is sent.

5. Check the cost of your actual workflow

Write down your expected subscriber count, sending frequency, need for timed sequences and any product checkout requirements. Confirm the plan that supports all four, including whether billing is monthly or annual. Recheck pricing at checkout, and keep any domain, payment-processing or other required charges separate. Avoid paying for hypothetical growth before the first newsletter is useful.

6. Make a small, reversible decision

Choose the candidate that handles your first month’s tasks with the fewest unresolved questions. Keep your writing and a record of how subscribers joined. Revisit the choice after you have sent real issues and learned what readers need. A platform choice cannot promise audience growth, inbox placement or sales. The useful next step is a small trial that answers a specific question.

Create your comparison worksheet

Before you decide

Do I need an automated welcome series?

A regular broadcast may cover your first month. If your plan includes messages timed from signup, verify that your selected plan supports them.

Which tool performs better?

This guide has no measured performance results. Use the same test tasks and record what fits your workflow.
